Credits: 4
This course explores the role of music in cinema, including an overview of the history and techniques of film music. It examines soundtrack music in feature films ranging from the silent era through Hollywood's Golden Age (including genres such as melodrama, noir, musicals, and westerns) to recent productions. The course also covers film music terminology and aspects of theory, with case studies on structural and interpretive analysis, classical scoring, montage, song scores, sound design, and related topics. The coursework includes ten assigned films to watch, one per week; students choose 7 of these films to write about in research/analysis papers. Students also complete a class presentation and final research/analysis paper discussing the music in their choice of a David Lynch film, a recent film musical, or a recent musician biopic. Open to juniors and seniors only.
