Composition Workshop

Spring 2020

Taught By: Stefania deKenessey

Section: AX

CRN: 7048

Credits: 4

This course continues to work with students in a wide range of contemporary musical genres, both acoustic and electronic, as they explore and deepen their individual compositional interests and abilities. We start by listening to short musical examples from diverse periods and cultures; we then use their underlying concepts (regarding melody and harmony, rhythm and meter, structure, etc.) as prompts for regular creative exercises where we experiment with these ideas in our own compositional voice. During the second half of the term, we write free compositions in a workshop setting, with an in-class performance or presentation of our final projects. Previous experience with music is strongly recommended; this course also serves as a sequel to Fundamentals of Western Music and/or the Composition Seminar. This upper-level course is restricted to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
