This course focuses on the design and creation of sculptural musical instruments using objects and materials supplemented by electronics. Hands-on creative work interleaves with seminar discussions of readings on the history and craft of experimental musical instruments, from Luigi Russolo’s “intonarumori” to contemporary practitioners working in the field today. Topics of study include sound propagation, the acoustics of spaces and materials, musical instrument classification systems, and the technical aspects of sound objects and environments such as amplification and resonance. A primary focus will be the relationship between form and function of musical instruments and their application to art and performance. Students will collaborate in a final musical performance with their hand-made creations.
