Curating Sound
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 16922
Credits: 4
The histories of sound art and experimental music can be told alongside how works by leading artists in the field have been disseminated by curators, concert producers, and benefactors within the museum industrial complex and independent venues. Scholarship and criticism have shaped their public view, solidifying a canon and archive. This course is an overview of the advocacy for and organization of sonic experiences that happen outside the commercial marketplace. Participants will learn the art of producing exhibits and concerts, writing curatorial statements and press releases, building audiences, fundraising, identifying and designing spaces (including technical considerations), event management, and engaging with critique/discourse. Students will write curatorial wall texts, catalog essays, press releases, fundraising proposals, and event listings. Course activities include field trips to galleries and concert venues, meetings with curators, producers, and workers in institutional development. The final is a day-long group exhibit/concert on the New School campus.
