This course explores creative approaches to analog and electronic sound manipulation through readings, critical listening sessions, and practical experimentation, composition, and live performance. Students will develop a strong historical and technical foundation while exploring advanced topics in synthesis, spectral editing, filtering, sampling, sequencing, and sound shaping techniques—including compression, side-chaining, waveshaping, distortion, and more. Students will analyze landmark works from electronic music repertoire alongside the work of a multigenerational roster of artists who have expanded the boundaries of their respective genres through innovative uses of technology. The course also examines the creative repurposing of technology to design and perform with new, original instruments.
