In this seminar, we explore ecology as intertwined with politics, collective memory, knowledge, language, community, identity, and ultimately with the transformation of a colonial and anti-Black world. We will approach the topics of ecology, climate, and land through Decolonial, Caribbean / Antillean, and Black feminist philosophical traditions, and through an interdisciplinary approach informed by Black Geographies and Ecologies. In particular, we will focus on the work of Édouard Glissant, the Martinican philosopher whose treatment of ecological politics has had profound influence across many fields including Africana philosophy, Continental philosophy, Black Studies, aesthetics, and contemporary art. Please note that this is a seminar+ course. To enrich your learning, we will supplement assigned course materials and class time with up to 15 hours of extra class activities throughout the semester.
