Zionism and the Israel/Palestine Question
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Philosophy
CRN: 17296
Credits: 4
Zionism, Israel/Palestine The question of Zionism creates an instructive case of national politics. While some view it as a Jewish emancipatory movement--in the aftermath of the Holocaust--others view it as a colonialist ideology. Since October 7th and Israel's attack in Gaza, this disagreement has created a genuine crisis of thinking. The class will focus on this crisis from a historical and philosophical perspective: the possibility of liberal Zionism (or Jewish democracy); the politics of memory and citizenship (Holocaust and Nakba); two-state vs one state constellations; the debates about BDS, the claims of apartheid and genocide.
