The question of Zionism creates an instructive case of national politics. While some view it as a Jewish emancipatory movement, others view it as a colonialist ideology. Since October 7th and Israel's campaign in Gaza, this disagreement has created a genuine crisis of thinking. The class will focus on this crisis from a philosophical perspective: the possibility of liberal Zionism (or Jewish democracy); the politics of memory and citizenship (Holocaust and Nakba); two-state vs one state constellations; the claims of apartheid and genocide.
