Credits: 4

This seminar offers a rare opportunity for philosophical close readings for Fanon’s two major works: Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth. We approach these books with an eye to Fanon’s engagement with and original contributions to continental philosophy, Africana philosophy, Marxism, and his innovative clinical practice as a psychologist. We will situate them in the context of Fanon’s experience in Martinique and mainland France, the anti-colonial Algerian war of liberation, and in conversation with revolutionary movements and theories of Black liberation, anti-colonialism and -imperialism in Fanon’s time and ours. Please note that this is a seminar+ course. To enrich your learning we will supplement assigned course materials and class time with up to 15 hours of extra class activities throughout the semester.
