Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Philosophy
CRN: 18067
Credits: 4
This course as designed as a comprehensive seminar on Spinoza's philosophy. In reading closely main themes from the Ethics and his Theological Political Treatise [TTP], we will focus first on Spinoza's main metaphysical doctrines (e.g., the geometrical method, rationalism, monism, freedom, etc.) and engage with the relation between these doctrines and his political philosophy (critique of authority and revelation, democracy, revolution). An underlying object of study will be Spinoza's claim that in order to attain personal freedom and political peace, normative judgments of 'good and evil' have to be overcome just as much as religion.
