Philosophy of Sartre
Fall 2026
Taught By: James Dodd
Section: A

CRN: 19424

Credits: 4

This is an advanced course on the existentialist philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. It will consist of a very close reading of Sartre’s major work, Being and Nothingness, and an early novel that introduces many of its themes, Nausea. Particular attention will be paid to the political and ethical consequences of Sartre’s ontology, as well as the unique character of Sartre’s phenomenology. Although prior acquaintance with Sartre’s work and phenomenological philosophy will not be presupposed, it is recommended that the student have a good grasp of the history of modern philosophy.
