The Politics of Reproductive Justice
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Politics
CRN: 15593
Credits: 4
Since the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, conservative activists have worked tirelessly to reverse the decision, and finally succeeded with Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This course starts from the conviction that, after the fall of Roe, feminists have much to learn from past organizing efforts for reproductive justice. We will track the history of organizing for and against reproductive justice in the U.S. over the past five decades, raising the following questions: How did feminists conceptualize abortion before Roe? What tactics did radical feminists use to place abortion on the political agenda? How did the notion of reproductive justice transform the public discussion around contraception, abortion, and sterilization? What rhetoric did conservative “pro-lifers” use to challenge Roe? Did the legal reasoning in Roe inadvertently lay the groundwork for the Dobbs decision? And, finally, what should feminists do in a post-Roe world?
