Visual Politics
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Politics
CRN: 15749
Credits: 4
The Visual Politics seminar extends classic concepts in the social sciences by considering them visually. The course is premised on the idea that politics is best considered in an expansive way that engages non-verbal aspects of communication. For example, we might ask what does authority look like? Are political identifications and disagreements voiced aesthetically? And what of resistance and change – do they also have a visual aspect? Weekly materials will include readings, lookings, and listenings from across the social sciences, humanities, and art and design. Graded assignments will include close readings of texts and images as well as the creation of visual essays. There will be three written assignments: an image response, a text response, and a visual essay. Students also will be required to visit one gallery, museum, or visual workshop during the term.
