The 2024 US Election in Real Time

The proportion of ELC students who might vote for Donald Trump for President in 2024 does not exceed 20%, and it might be less than half that. Many students have never had any sustained interaction with a Trump supporter, beyond an uncomfortable conversation at a large Thanksgiving dinner. From Manhattan, the country where Trump has exceeded 45% of the popular vote in the last two elections and seems likely to do so again can seem far away. This course follows the path of the 2024 presidential campaign, paying due attention to its twists and surprises. Our main question is: how can a candidate facing so many trials and stigmas be making a serious successful run for President? We look at the sources of Trumpist and Republican strength. We avoid accounts that attribute Trump’s strength to the terrible taste of the American people, where ‘terrible’ is only code for the parts of Trumpism one most dislikes. In the summer, the political world has changed dramatically in the U.S. President Biden has exited the presidential race. Vice-President Harris will be the Democratic nominee, with a nominee to be named for Vide President. Ex- President Trump was injured and almost murdered. The course will start by assessing the new terrain for the presidential race that emerges after the Democratic National Convention.
