Sociology of Religion Beyond the West
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Liberal Arts
CRN: 17488
Credits: 4
"Sociology of Religion Beyond the West" explores the interplay between religion, society, and culture, focusing on non-Western contexts. The course examines how experiences such as those of the Muslim community in China, Thai female immigrants in Europe and Aum Shinrikyo in Japan can inform new understandings of themes central to Western sociology theory, such as secularization, gender and religion, and new religious movements ("cults"). Through short lectures, case studies, and wide-ranging discussions, students gain a deeper understanding of the complexity and diversity of religious experiences outside the Western paradigm and a broader perspective on the sociology of religion beyond the West.
