Islamic Mysticism, Philosophy, and the Occult
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Liberal Arts
CRN: 16652
Credits: 4
This course explores the spiritual landscape of “the unseen” that is integral to Muslim theologies and beliefs. In addition to covering the foundational impact of the Islamic mystical tradition known as Sufism, this course also examines Muslim engagement with the occult—such as the Quranic category of beings made from "smokeless fire" known as “jinn”—that cross the boundaries between theology and magic, and how Islamic philosophy bridges the gap between the rational and the non-rational. We will examine a variety of sources from historical and contemporary Muslim communities from around the world, such as theological texts, prayer guides, and talismanic objects. Since this is a seminar-plus course, the class includes visits to sites in New York City such as museums. No prior knowledge of Islam is required.
