Biology of Mending
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Eugene Lang
CRN: 15886
Credits: 4
This class considers tensions between making and mending in biology through the lens of biodesign and bioart practices. The class will examine repair from the perspectives of cell signaling, developmental biology, DNA repair, and the formation of scar tissue. We will also consider healing from ecological perspectives such as landscape resilience and bioremediation. Students will engage in close readings, data visualization and analysis, consider implications for material practice in lab and studio explorations, and develop an independent final project which intersects their creative and scientific practices with the process of healing and repair. Students will emerge with an understanding of the cellular strategies that living things use in the process of growth, healing and regeneration.
