[Directing]: DIY Filmmaking
Fall 2025
Taught By: Daniel Schmidt
Section: A

CRN: 18202

Credits: 4

This course covers how to create visually interesting films under the constraint of utilizing the equipment students have available to them (iPhone, mirrorless, DSLR, etc). Students registering will be required to have access to a computer that is able to run editing software (Premiere Pro, etc). The goal of the class will be to teach concrete skills about how creativity can be used in the environment of low budget productions to make visually/emotionally compelling films. Over the course of the semester, students will carry out a series of hands-on exercises & projects that will culminate in a final short film, made under the restrictions of indie production and health regulations that may be in place at that point in time. While this class will be grounded in production, it will also include an analysis of films influenced by a DIY aesthetic approach, and conversations with a number of guest artists creating innovative work in this space. Access to a computer that is able to run editing software is required for this course (that is, MacBook Pro or equivalent.) It is strongly recommended that students complete both Editing and Cinematography (taken spring 2025 or prior) or Screen Foundations (taken fall 2025 or later) or have demonstrably commensurate experience prior to registering for this course.
