This is a class on the films of John Cassavetes, the spiritual father of modern independent cinema. We will analyze each of his films and read Cassavetes scholar Ray Carney’s definitive study of Cassavetes’ work as it relates to both Modernism and the philosophical tradition of American Pragmatism. Students will be required to make weekly video essays about Cassavetes’ films.
