[Special Topics]: The Cinema of Operations
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Culture & Media
CRN: 19689
Credits: 4
In this production course, students are introduced to installation techniques and selected historical texts addressing the presentation of moving images beyond theatrical single channel display. The class will explore contemporary and historical artistic practices that foreground the mechanisms of image production in cinema, television, social media and state surveillance. Students will be expected to complete three audio visual projects that incorporate performance, sculpture and other sourced materials. Critiques of these projects are crucial to the course as students are expected to speak at length about the formal, technical, critical and historical dimensions of their work. Weekly readings in philosophy, critical theory, artist statements and literature are assigned in addition to group field trips to museums, galleries and artist studios. The course will also include weekly screenings of films and videos, introducing students to the history of moving-image art practices. It is strongly recommended that students complete both Editing and Cinematography (taken spring 2025 or prior) or Screen Foundations (taken fall 2025 or later) or have demonstrably commensurate experience prior to registering for this course.
