This course introduces sociological perspectives on social movements and collective action. The course will explore specific historical and contemporary social movements, primarily in the 20th-century United States, including labor movements, racial and gender justice movements, and conservative movements. We will pay special attention to the role of young people in fostering social change and to connections among movements. These case studies will also give students the opportunity to develop proficiency in key sociological concepts related to social movements, including emergence, growth, decline, and outcomes, as well as organizational dynamics, movement tactics, framing, and identity.
