Face to Face with Climate Change
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Sociology
CRN: 15673
Credits: 4
Climate change communication has long been concerned with the nature of climate change as invisible, and thus not graspable: With a transparent gas as the main villain, the locale being a globally spanning atmosphere and the plot stretched out over time, the story is hard to tell. Of course, as extreme weather events become more regular topics of media reporting, ideas of what a warming world will look like also become more manifest. But imagining climate change remains a complex task influenced by science and science fiction, street protest and global power players, hard facts and moral dilemmas. Importantly, people see climate change from various angles of geographic and social position and some images and imaginations remain local while others circulate the globe. This course will discuss the basics of climate change and how they impact the social life of the concept. We will explore (visual) representations of the globe, climate, and its changes and understand their role in a performative dramatization of climate change in the spheres of globalized politics, activism, media, and popular culture. This course will offer the space and time for students to develop their own original ideas and interventions to imagine and visually “stage” climate-changed futures based on class materials.
