This dramatic literature course examines how theater has responded to fascist and authoritarian regimes across history and around the world. We will investigate why Sophocles’ Antigone—one of the earliest dramatic challenges to tyranny—has been so prolifically restaged in times of political repression. We will read plays by Bertolt Brecht, one of the most influential anti-fascist playwrights of all times, who fled both Nazi Germany and US Anti-Communism. We will trace the legacy of anti-authoritarian theater here at The New School, from Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop and the Group Theatre to Judith Malina’s Living Theatre. Finally, we will examine Latin American plays that confronted the enduring impact of fascism in Cold War dictatorships and the resurgence of neofascism in the region. By engaging with transnational theatrical responses to fascism and authoritarianism, this course will be of interest not only to students of theater and literature but also to those studying politics, history, and global studies. This course fulfills the Dramatic Literature requirement for Lang Theater majors and minors.
