ZOOM PLAYS: Eco-Justice Edu.
Taught By: Cecilia Rubino
In this CLA course, students will explore the connection between engaged theater and issues of Environmental Justice, as they participate in running ZOOM PLAYS -- a virtual After school Drama Program for NYC elementary school students. In seminar sessions, students will be exposed to critical pedagogy and transformative arts education, as they explore the politics and practice of Theater in Education, its connections to the Gaming and Improv moments and the challenging themes of eco-justice. Students will work with visiting fellows -- Jeremy Picard, director of the Superhero Clubhouse & Big Green Theater, an award-winning company which works with youth through theater on Climate & Environmental Justice, and Shanelle Gabriel, the deputy director of Urban Word NYC, an organization which champions NYC youth advocacy through poetry and spoken word. And through seminar sessions students will plan and develop their own Environmental Justice/theater workshop sessions for NYC after school students co-taught via zoom sessions. At the end of the semester Lang students will help facilitate a ZOOM PLAYS final sharing with their NYC Afterschool students for families and the community. Coursework also includes readings, weekly written reflections and a final project in which students create curriculum proposals for their own Arts & Education projects. For this course, the students need only a laptop with a working camera or an external webcam (no preference) and a reliable high-speed internet connection.
