Performing Decoloniality
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 17410
Credits: 4
Performing Decoloniality explores the intersections of performance and decoloniality in both theory and practice. Given the global rise of neofascism and the return of overt White Nationalism, how might performance be a useful methodological tool to understand the moment we live in today? What are the connections between performance theory and practice and the devastating legacy of European and US-American colonialism and imperialism across the world? We will begin by reading performance studies scholars (such as Diana Taylor, Fred Moten, Macarena Gómez-Barris) and postcolonial and decolonial theorists (such as Frantz Fanon, Walter Mignolo, Achille Mbembe); we will watch video documentation and read analysis of performance artists who move in this intersection (such as Coco Fusco, Regina Galindo, William Pope.L); and we will end by creating performance pieces across different media that address coloniality today. This course fulfills the Dramatic Literature requirement for Lang Theater majors and minors.
