Playwriting: Documentary Theater
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 11858
Credits: 4
How do we document historic moments and real experience through performance? Documentary Playwriting explores the process of creating reality-based work: its history, theory, and practice. We’ll watch performances, read plays and critical writings on this vitally expansive documentary form while asking questions about how truths are represented and by whom. Blending fact, fiction and personal experience, we’ll generate hybrid theatrical texts from transcribed interviews, researched archival materials, and our own imaginative observation. This course fulfills an elective requirement for Theater majors and minors.
