This intermediate playwriting course explores the genre of Documentary Theater by placing primary focus on the students' hometowns. Through research and interviewing, each student will work to uncover how members of a particular community responded to an event, either nationally or locally. This work can focus on a local story, either from the news or one that has become part of a shared community mythology, that seeks to engage its participants in new ways of thinking about a local event that has had a social impact. Students will be exposed to the work of playwrights and companies who employ, or have founded similar methods, for creating pieces that offer an alternative to traditional theatrical practice. Each student will be required to individually create their own short documentary theater pieces. This course fulfills an elective requirement for Theater majors and minors.
