How might a theatrical exploration of real events empower us? How do we create text for a live performance investigating history and lived experience? This playwriting course delves into the genre of Documentary Theater and the creation of plays/texts interweaving factual documentation with our own performative response. We will read seminal documentary plays, contemporary and historic, along with critical writings on the definitions and practices of this vital, continually expanding theatrical form. New plays will be created through transcribed interviews, gathering primary source and other archival materials, in combination with generating original writing. Finding one’s own hybrid, mixed-media form in response to each project's specific content will be explored. We’ll also look at ways of working within a community context to create a documentary theater at the intersection of reality, social commitment, and imaginative possibility.
