The Latinx Experience
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 15792
Credits: 4
This course is an exploration of Latinx Artists and their work. Latinx Art is a term that has been embraced in the last few years by artistic and academic communities to address Latin American culture in the United States, emphasizing the history and experience of immigration and the diaspora. We begin with an analysis of the term, the continued controversy around it, and how the term relates to issues of representation and visibility for the artists. We will highlight how artists such as Amalia Mesa-Bains, Guadalupe Maravilla, Juana Valdés, David Antonio Cruz, Carmen Argote, Enrique Martínez Celaya, Elia Alba and many others, have responded to the complexity of their cultural and sociopolitical contexts through their artistic practice. Students will explore themes related to identity, politics, memory, hybridity, migration, class, gender, and race. Through analysis of artworks, visits to exhibitions and/or artists’ studios, readings, screenings, and discussions, students will engage with the diverse perspectives and voices of The Latinx Experience in art, its cultural heritage and its contemporary artistic expressions. By addressing the interplay between art, society, politics, and history, students will develop an in-depth understanding of Latinx Art - and the impact of artistic expression in shaping social awareness and facilitating dialogues across communities.
