The City as Campus: Visual Arts in NYC
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 19458
Credits: 4
"The City as Campus: Visual Arts in NYC" course is structured around weekly field-trips to exhibitions, screenings, and visits to artist's studios. The course promotes active participation in the wider field of visual arts, extending our space of learning beyond the classroom to NYC’s many art institutions and cultural organizations; the course claims the city as our campus. In situ, we will closely analyze works of art, discuss their historical context as well as the context of their exhibition, and their significance today; for select trips, curators and other art professionals in the field will accompany us. We will visit art museums and institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Hispanic Society, Americas Society, as well as art galleries across the city, and artists' studios. We meet once a week and the field trips will be supplemented with readings and weekly response paper assignments. For LVIS majors, the course fulfills a practice-based art history/visual studies elective course requirement.
