Art and Esoteric Systems: From Symbolism to Abstraction and Surrealism
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 15769
Credits: 4
For generations, artists have been deeply interested in mysticism and esoteric beliefs. This course will offer a perspective on art that was shaped by these systems of belief, from the symbolic and mythical images of the Symbolists, to the abstractions of Hilma af Klint and Kazimir Malevich, the figurative paintings of Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, and the works of Jackson Pollock. We will study theosophy, kabbalah, alchemy, sacred geometry, freemasonry, spiritualism, astrology, and numerology in connection to science and cultural contexts in Europe, the United States, and Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth century.
