Race, Gender and Video Games
Schools of Public Engagement: Media
CRN: 16588
Credits: 3
This class will use gaming as a medium to explore questions of identity, representation, and power. From small indie games and mobile apps to large-budget studio products, video games have been flashpoints for social arguments about race, gender, sexuality, disability, and other aspects of selfhood since their inception. Work by people of color, trans and queer people, and other marginalized creators will be emphasized. We’ll read digital history and theory, play and analyze games from multiple genres, and even make our own simple games. No coding or previous gaming experience required; come join if you are curious about contemporary media, politics, theory, play, and art.tba
