This course explores relationships between urban food production and activism for social and environmental justice in the food system. As a class, we will discuss concepts of urban agriculture and food activism, and review various types of urban agriculture and community-based food activism in cities. Throughout the course, students will investigate how urban agriculture and food activism can be understood in particular case studies; work to understand approaches to community-driven urban agriculture and policy advocacy; and develop a proposal of how to provide support to stakeholders in bringing about food systems change through urban food production and related initiatives. The course includes weekly online class sessions, online guest lectures and/or virtual field trips, and individual learning about a community urban agriculture project of their choosing. This is a hybrid course that meets in the following mode: Tuesdays we meet online from 4-5:50 pm; the additional two hours of the course work each week consist of asynchronous material and instructor guidance using Canvas modules and discussions. Students will have additional homework outside of the synchronous/asynchronous modules.
