Palestine, Israel, Power, & Media Narratives

No conflict has animated global conversations even remotely as intensively and extensively as have the events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in late 2023. The intensity and reach of that conversation, its pathways, and its parameters reflect everything from a shattered and constantly reconstituting media universe to profound shifts in the geopolitical order and the continued ideological settling of accounts between the West and the decolonizing Global South. The drama of the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the Israeli campaign of obliteration in Gaza that followed has called forth a dizzying storm of contested but deeply relevant historical narratives. This course aims to unpack these narratives, exploring them in their historical and contemporary regional and global contexts — critical examinations of contemporary Jewish history, European colonialism, Western imperialism, and the resistance of Arab populations. Particular attention will be paid to the manufacture and transmission of these narratives through various news and cultural media and how the changes in those media ecosystems have changed the Israel-Palestine conversation. The course will be taught by Tony Karon, an adjunct professor teaching media-related courses in the Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School since 2010. Tony is uniquely qualified to teach the course. He is a writer, editor, and editorial leader with over 25 years of experience in news-related print and online media, particularly covering international affairs and conflicts and global cultural and political issues, especially on the Middle East. He is currently the editorial director of AJ+, the Al Jazeera social-media brand. He previously played the same role in the online version of Al Jazeera America, and before that was a senior editor at TIME magazine, where he worked for 15 years.
