Project Implementation: PIA II
Schools of Public Engagement: Grad Programs in Int'l Affairs
CRN: 9290
Credits: 3
The vast majority of international aid and development interventions are delivered via programs and projects. While prerequisites Project Cycle Management, and Critiquing, Negotiating and Advocating Policy courses focus on skills and project preparation, the Practicum in International Affairs II allows students to implement a project, producing a deliverable requested by an international client organization. The Practicum emphasizes deadlines and professional standards for work products, and the importance of being responsive to clients and working closely with teammates. Student teams undertake a Terms of Reference, conduct research, data collection and analysis, and produce a report or other final product. Finally, the team makes a formal presentation to the client and The New School community. As a final-semester capstone course, students apply all cumulative knowledge and experience from prior course work, internships, summer programs and past jobs toward this effort. Project teams or individuals meet separately with their faculty supervisor at a time weekly (to be determined by the team and faculty) to review the week’s work. These meetings are treated largely as “project updates,” similar to what one would have with a client.
