This course will examine key ethical issues confronting new media professionals today. In addition to a basic introduction to ethics and communication, the course will examine new thorny issues, which have emerged as a result of new media formats like the Internet. Specific areas covered include privacy, including surreptitious data collection of Web visitors and the monitoring of employee emails, free speech on the Internet, potential perils of online journalism, and current controversies over copyright and intellectual property on the Internet. Course work will include readings, in depth discussions, along with a final essay project.

Open to: MS Media Management and MA Media Studies majors only; others by permission of the MS Media Management program.
