Advanced Dealmaking for Media

Summer 2019

Taught By: Steven Hammersly

Section: A

CRN: 1945

Credits: 3

This course is designed to give students who are familiar with the ecosystem and economics of the media industry exposure to more advanced topics related to constructing media alliances, structuring licensing deals, developing co-marketing partnerships and the like. Our work will focus on how to ground media deals using financial analysis techniques, how to manage the deal process most effectively, employing game theory in dealmaking work, and how to use win-win negotiation tactics to best advantage. While the course does not require higher-level quantitative skills, students who have familiarity with accounting principles, basic business terminology, project management, experience in dealmaking in the mediasphere, and/or economics of the media industry will get the most out of this course. The primary course objective will be to enable students to become comfortable and facile with deal engineering, and with counsel, how to turn a well-engineered deal into a formal agreement. Pre-Requisite: Highly recommended Media Economics (NMDS 5301) or equivalent. This section is open to Master of Science and graduate certificate Media Management students only. All other graduate students may request access three weeks before the start of the course by emailing mediastudiesadvising@newschool.edu.
