How do words make us see? Like images, words haunt us. But they also make us “see” the unseeable, the invisible, or imaginary. These questions become more complicated with the birth of photography, which transformed the written word. This course considers the role of documenting and remembering—“afterimages”—in writing and photography. But it also asks what happens to writing after photography, which can stand beyond it, sometimes ethically, or stand alongside it as a companion. Forms and genres include the essay, poetry, the novel, criticism, and journalism, as well as theories of vision, photography, and post-photography in the digital age.

Media Studies courses are open to all graduate students. Undergraduate Juniors and Seniors with permission from the instructor and BA/MA Media studies students should email mediastudiesadvising@newschool.edu for access.
