The essence of making images is capturing light, and knowing how to control lighting. This intensive workshop is packed with information to demystify concepts of lighting and to learn the tricks of the trade for image-makers wishing to produce high quality material on a low budget. Beginning with fundamental theories and concepts of light, participants will learn in a practical hands-on environment how to maximize results for natural /available light, utilize techniques for controlled lighting (including mechanisms for sculpting light), and become skilled at 1-point and 4-point lighting set-ups using low-cost portable light kits and DIY Lighting Setups. This 1-credit Tech Workshop takes place over three consecutive Saturdays, with hands-on homework assignments during the intervening weeks. NOTE: For ONLINE section only: Students taking this course on-line are expected to own or acquire a Sony Mirrorless Digital Camera and Adobe Cloud-compatible computer, a portable lighting kit from Linco.com or comparable equipment. The camera is available for free check-out on campus, or for purchase from www.bhphotovideo.com (Sony A6500 Mirrorless Digital Camera) with a 16 to 50 mm lens kit.The portable lighting kit is available at Lincostore.com. Or a LED Panel and a 5 in 1 reflector. Please contact Instructor for equipment details and acceptable substitutions prior to registration.

This course is open to MA in Media Studies, MS and graduate certificate in Media Management, and Documentary Studies Certificate students only. All other graduate students may request permission after August 1st by emailing mediastudiesadvising@newschool.edu.
