Tech Workshop: Interviewing
Fall 2024
Taught By: Suzanne Snider
Section: A

CRN: 17322

Credits: 1

Embracing a range of media and motives with which students are working, we will explore the art of the interview as a social, somatic and technical practice through hands-on training. This immersive workshop will include listening exercises, equipment tutorials, project design, ethical case studies and discussion. We'll critique examples of powerful interview-based work across media that emphasize the interview process as well as possible outcomes. These examples (photography, video, radio documentary and print) will serve as inspiration for students' work. In building our eclectic skill set, we will readily borrow from adjacent fields (psychoanalysis, oral history, and acoustic ecology among others) to explore a range of relevant topics including trauma, insider-outsider dynamics, reciprocity, collaborative analysis, and the power of silence. Students should be prepared to complete at least one interview outside of class during this three-day workshop.

This course is open to MA in Media Studies, MS and graduate certificate in Media Management, and Documentary Studies Certificate students only. All other graduate students may request permission three (3) weeks before the start of the course by emailing mediastudiesadvising@newschool.edu.
