This course provides an overview of fundamental concepts of organizational theory and design, inter-organizational processes, and the economic, institutional and cultural contexts that organizations operate in today’s postindustrial and increasingly global society and how they shape (or deter) an organization in advancing inclusion, innovation, and impact. Specific attention will be paid to phenomena such as the future of work, knowledge economy, automation and AI, and climate change. By the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Develop a shared and generative vocabulary and understanding about organizations as sites and vehicles of inclusion, innovation, and impact; Critically assess the impacts of macro trends in technology, social changes and workforce changes on mangers and organizations, and develop an approach to address these impacts; Define systems theory and systems thinking, and describe their applicability in an environment of continual change; Describe and analyze the evolution of management theory; and integrate applicable theory into a coherent managerial philosophy; Develop a framework for analyzing the key attributes of an organization and apply the particulars to a specific situation; Apply basic concepts of organization theory and design to specific situations and specific organizations; Learn about balancing competing demands and forces to which organizations must respond - continuity and change, structure and agency, culture, structure, power and politics.
