In this course students will explore the newly emerging area of developing and adopting technologically innovative solutions to solve social and environmental problems. This course introduces technological innovation as a strategic function from the perspective of managers and entrepreneurs, theory and practice of social innovation, i.e. developing and implementing novel solutions that are more just, effective and sustainable to thorny and wicked problems for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals. Building on these two theoretical frameworks, the course explore technology innovation can be combined with social innovation. Students will learn about both internal and external sources of innovation as well as the appropriate strategies and processes for capitalizing on them through a systematic evaluation of alternatives and recommending particular technology strategy for emerging and existing organizations. Students will also learn to critically assess the impact of technology innovation on various stakeholder groups including negative externalities of technological innovation.
