Eco Radicals: The Legacy of Revolutionary Cooperatives
Schools of Public Engagement: BPATS
CRN: 17248
Credits: 3
This seminar is more than an academic learning journey—it's an invitation to learn about and harness the transformative power of the cooperative movement for your life and community. It's a call to action, exploring the historical nexus of radical cooperativism and ecology. Together, we'll delve into foundational texts, from Robert Owen's seminal "A New View of Society" to W.E.B. Du Bois's integration of race and class in "Economic Cooperation". The seminar extends its scope, drawing insights from Naomi Klein’s "This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate", Murray Bookchin's "The Ecology of Freedom: The Emergence and Dissolution of Hierarchy", and Wangari Maathai's inspiring "Unbowed: A Memoir". As we unravel Peter Ranis's "Cooperatives Confront Capitalism" and engage with critiques by Karl Marx and Rosa Luxemburg, you'll gain tools to critically evaluate, and perhaps even shape, modern economic structures. Join us as we not only uncover the radical ecological roots of cooperatives but also inspire a new generation of eco-radicals.
