“Education is the practice of freedom”—the oft quoted phrase from bell hooks, inspired by the writings of Brazilian educator, philosopher, and activist Paulo Freire—sets the stage for this course. Our collective inquiry asks: how has education been a multi-scalar method and sector through which social movements have envisioned, strategized, and enacted liberation—and practiced freedom in place? Drawing on anthropology, geography, critical race studies, feminist, and anti-carceral studies, we will consider historical and contemporary global case studies to learn about the formation of freedom schools, street academies, quilombos, and more. We will explore how social movements, and their attendant theories of change, have understood education as, on the one hand, a critical site, method, and practice through which to trace the structures and modalities of enclosure, or the “removal/withdrawal/denial of services and programs that are key to the stability and long-term well-being of communities” (Sojoyner, 2016), and as a space through which to forge liberation struggles, ground collective knowledge, build capacity for self-determination, (re)establish social relations, and expand political horizons.
