Attachment is a concept that infiltrates many facets of our daily lives. It is often referenced in popular media, social media and psychological science to explain aspects of life, love, and success - from infancy through adulthood. And yet, very often, these ideas and connections are explained in basic and superficial terms. In this course we seek to deepen our understanding of attachment across the lifespan by examining questions such as: What is attachment? How do we become “attached”? Where does attachment start? How does one “get it”? How does one keep it, change it, and pass it on? Is it the same for everyone, or how is it socially/culturally mediated? This course will define and explore the origins and applications of Attachment Theory, including its foundations in psychoanalysis, developmental science, evolutionary psychology and ecology/biology. Together, we will examine longitudinal methods and studies that follow people from infancy through adulthood, with a focus on the role of attachment across the lifespan and across generations. Additionally we will focus on how attachment might influence specific transitional phases and experiences on the many journeys of life. Finally, we will broaden our focus to critique the ways in which socio-cultural factors have both informed and been excluded from the attachment literature.
