Doctoral Research Seminar
Spring 2026
Taught By: Antina von Schnitzler
Section: A

CRN: 2480

Credits: 3

The course is intended for Milano doctoral students transitioning from coursework to candidacy and it is structured around the literature review and dissertation proposal requirements. The course’s overarching objective is to prepare students to craft scholarly policy research from idea to written document and it is organized around three complementary goals:

1) Discussing and reflecting on the goals and process of producing research, including how to frame a problem, learning of different methods and styles of presenting results, and understanding assumptions and limitations of academic research.
2) Developing analytical and practical skills in order to conduct a comprehensive literature review. The literature review should lead to the development of a dissertation research question.
3) Understanding the process of developing a dissertation project, including the identification of a “good” and “doable” topic, developing a research question, selecting research methods, etc.
Students will make substantial progress on the literature review and/or the dissertation proposal. Students will critically evaluate examples of research, including those of their peers and their own. This work will be presented in class and subject to peer-discussion towards the end of the semester.
