An intermediate-level Spanish-language conversation and writing course which focuses on the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico). With the goal of exploring a wide-range of writing genres, film / media, art and performance, the course ventures to explore pan-Caribbean histories and contemporary contexts. Designed for students interested in furthering the development of their oral and written proficiency in Spanish through culture. The course offers a panoramic overview of Spanish-language media from the Spanish Caribbean related to current events spanning ethnic, gender, socio-political and cultural realities. Students will engage in lively class discussions and conduct presentations, writing assignments, and creative projects. [In Spanish] Proficiency: intermediate proficiency in Spanish is required. Spanish Caribbean Lit, Art & Media satisfies the following University Shared Capacities requirements: 1) Critical Analysis; 2) Communication; 3) Ethical Reasoning All New School Language Department courses are structured around the following three learning objectives: ∙ Linguistic proficiency (linguistic competencies that learners exhibit in each of the four major language skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing) ∙ Cultural competency (knowledge and understanding of other cultures) ∙ Intercultural literacy (understanding and appreciating the similarities and differences in the customs, values, and beliefs of one’s own culture compared to the cultures of others) Spanish Caribbean Lit, Art & Media focuses on a wide-range of communication (reading & writing), critical analysis, and cultural competencies, to be learned by students as described further below (on the syllabus).
