"This course examines the politics of transportation policy from a multidisciplinary perspective. We will analyze transportation infrastructures as complex socio-technical systems and focus on answering three key questions: 1) How do transportation systems impact economic, social and environmental dimensions of urban life? 2) What are the politics behind transportation planning decisions? and 3) How can transportation policy help produce more inclusive cities? The course draws from classic transportation planning and policy literature as well as new and critical scholarship on urban mobility and urban politics from a variety of disciplines, including geography, sociology, anthropology and urban planning. The course is aimed at providing undergraduate and graduate students with tools for the critical analysis of transportation projects and policies in the US and across the globe. The course is designed around 4 complementary goals: a) To introduce students to contemporary theoretical and methodological frameworks for the critical analysis of urban transportation policy and its social, economic, and environmental dimensions. b) To review the fundamental concerns of urban transportation planning and examine its links to other policy fields, including climate policy, housing, economic development, and public health. c) To analyze transportation infrastructures as the focus of a variety of political processes in which elites, policy experts, social movements, and citizens participate. d) To identify and reflect on the relationship between transportation policy, inequality, and social justice by observing the past, present, and future of urban mobility technologies and design innovations."
