This workshop is open to all genres. Implicit in the idea of the class is that each genre has much to learn and benefit from the others in terms of technique, approach, vocabulary, architecture etc. It’s a way of opening up the conversation among genres and also of offering the opportunity, if wanted, of extending your own practice beyond strict boundaries and notions of genre. Can there be such a thing as an essay-poem (consider Maggie Nelson’s Bluets), or a lyrical memoir, a fiction that incorporates a great deal of non-fiction, a non-fiction that uses some techniques gleaned from fiction? In this class, if you choose to, you may find yourself extending your definition of genre to incorporate characteristics and techniques more often found in other genres. But that is optional, and will depend on your own needs and inclinations. Each week we’ll discuss work by three of you. And each week you’ll hand in written responses to the authors of the work under discussion. We’ll give close, responsive readings to each piece, paying close attention to its own particular ambitions, nature, and characteristics.

Creative Writing at The New School follows an evolved workshop method of teaching and discussion: an experienced practitioner provides guidance, both in class and during individual conferences. Students balance inspiration with revision; explore methodologies while developing their individual voices and styles. The structure and content of workshops are adapted to the individual area of concentration. The MFA provides students with a framework and time to focus extensively on their own writing. Graduate workshops may include an assigned reading list and occasional visits by guest writers or associated professionals. Classes meet once a week in two and a half hour sessions, and are conveniently scheduled in the early evenings. Workshops are intended for MFA students; other university students may enroll based on availability and permission.
