Textiles & Materials
Parsons School of Design: School of Fashion
CRN: 7963
Credits: 3
In this course, we will cover the fundamental knowledge of fashion textiles and materials. We will study fibers and yarns, fabrics and their properties, and identification methods. We will investigate different techniques for creating textiles--such as weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, and felting--while considering their historical, cultural, ethnic and geographic contexts. We will also look at environmentally and socially sustainable manufacturing and production methods to broaden our understanding of textile materials and processes. This course will also introduce students to Parsons-based resources and offerings, including 3D printing, laser cutting, digital printing, digital pattern making, the Making Center, and the Healthy Materials Lab. Class time will include hands-on work and exploration, lectures, and demonstrations of various techniques. These formats will allow us to investigate textile fibers, properties, performance, durability, care requirements, and end-uses. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of textile and yarn technology, understand the development of textiles in various contexts, and showcase an ability to manipulate fabric through innovative design. Note: PAFD 1000 Design Communication, PAFD 1010 Textiles & Materials, PAFD 1100 Core 1, and PAFD 1110 Technical Studio must all be completed before progressing to PAFD 1200 Core 2 and beyond.
