Structural Technology 2: Lecture
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 1118
Credits: 3
This class, part 2 of a two-semester sequence, uses the principles learned in Structural Technology 1 to design with steel, wood and concrete: primary focus is on the basic structural elements such as beams and columns. Students are given a basic understanding of structural design concepts with Steel, Wood and Concrete as a building material. They develop a “structural sense” and thus have the ability to size structural members and integrate them in the building structure. In addition they are taught methods and economy of construction, to utilize structural elements appropriate to different building trades, to communicate effectively with engineers and building contractors, to be able to function effectively in an architectural practice and, to be prepared for the architectural licensing exam. The semester-long project involves the design of a 3 - 4 story building with the structural system(s) fully articulated.
